Fly-tipping is on the increase, and the country is seeing more and more asbestos being dumped, costing local councils thousands of pounds in the safe removal and disposal.
Recently, a rogue commercial operator in the Nottingham area is suspected of being responsible for a number of cases across the district.
The costs and dangers of fly-tipping, particularly asbestos, poses health risks, and disposal must be carried out by specialist licensed contractors.
A local Councillor has said ”The fact that it has been dumped in this manner suggests that it has not been removed safely, which could put people at risk”.
Asbestos is generally safe until it is disturbed.
It has been advised that anyone who is having work done on their property, or has paid someone to take their waste away, must make sure they are registered with the Environment Agency.
If waste is illegally dumped, the owner can be fined up to £50,000 and/or receive a prison sentence of up to five years.
